Areas of Practice

Psychotropic management

Recovery from mental illness is frequently complicated by inadequate (inappropriate dosing and duration) drug treatment trials that prevent the clinician from making an informed decision regarding drug selection and/or titration. We attempt to be systematic in our intervention trials, frequently using pharmacogenetic testing to inform our choice of agents.

Naturopathic and nutritional supplementation

(Drug) treatment-resistance can result from endogenous genetic factors which predict an individual’s ability to respond to one agent or another. In addition to informing drug selection, pharmacogenetic testing can identify those individuals with specific vulnerabilities to being drug treatment-resistant. Moreover, nutritional supplementation augments the potential benefits of psychotropic treatment. Fortunately, many individuals can experience clinical improvement with appropriate nutritional supplementation. Once again, we attempt to utilize available evidence to justify our decision-making in selecting such interventions

Life style and stress management

Mental illness is not a deficiency of psychotropic medication. We dont treat it as such. We use medications to address physical symptoms associated with mental illness. However, we expect our patients will require multimodal interventions to assist in their recovery. We utilize a supportive and psychoeducational model of psychotherapy to introduce our patients to life style tools which we believe will enhance stress management and, ultimately, reduce the risk of relapse.
